Substance A is 1:1 mixture of two compounds I and II:

Will the mixture show optical activity ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

It will not show any optical activity because the substance is a racemic mixture of equal amounts of I and II. One of the compounds rotates the plane-polarized light towards left while the other rotates the plane-polarized light towards left to the same extent so that net optical rotation is zero.
