Discuss briefly, the relative rates of reaction of HBr with respect to primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The relative rates of reaction with HBr are :
Tertiary `gt` Secondary `gt` Primary alcohol.
This is because the alkyl radicals due to their +I effect tend to increase the electron displacement towards oxygen. It helps in breaking the bond between carbon and oxygen of the -OH group. Thus, greater the number of alkyl groups attached to the carbon bearing -OH group, higher will be the reactivity of alcohol.
