How can the production of dihydrogen, obtained from ‘coal gasification’, be increased?

Text Solution

Coal gasification. involves the reaction of red hot coke with steam at 1270 K (Bosch process).
`underset("Coal")(C(s))+underset("Stream")(H_(2)O)overset(1270K)tounderset("(Water gas)")(underset(("Syn gas"))(ubrace(CO(g)+H_(2)(g))))`
The production of dihydrogen can be increased by reacting carbon monoxide of syngas mixture with steam in the presence of iron chromate as catalyst.
`CO(g)+H_(2)O(g)underset(FeCrO_(4))overset(673K)toCO_(2)(g)+H_(2)(g)`
This is called water gas shift reaction. Carbon dioxide is removed by scrubbing with sodium arsenite solution.
