The additional volume of air that can be breathed with maximum forceful inspiration is called inspiratory reserve volume (IRV). After breathing out tidal volume, an additional volume of about 1000 ml of air can be expired by the maximum effort. This additional volume is known as expiratory reserve volume (ERV).
