A spring balance shows wrong reading after using for a long time. Why?

This is due to the decrease in strength of the spring, as it is subjected to alternating strain for a long time. Such a spring may break, even for a streess less than its breaking stress, because it gives more extension for a given load, as the spring is "fatigued". Hence the balance gives wrong readings.
