Both transverse and longitudinal mechani...

Both transverse and longitudinal mechanical waves can propagate through a solid, but only longitudinal wave can propagate through a gas. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Gases have only volume elasticity, but solids have both volume and shear elasticity. This means gases do not regain their original shape after the removal of the deforming forces and so only longitudinal waves are possible in them.
