Give the relationship between the fundamental note and overtone in an open pipe.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The frequency of the fundamental note in an open pipe is `v_(1)=V/(4L)`, 2. V is the velocity of sound in air and and L is the length of the open pipe. The frequency of the harmonic or overtones are related by `v_(m)=(2n-1)^(4)=(2n-1)v_(1)` when `v_(m),` is the frequency of the nth mode of vibration. The above equation gives the (2n -1)th harmonic or (n-1)th overtone.
