Assertion: Stationary waves are so calle...

Assertion: Stationary waves are so called because particles are at rest in stationary waves.
Reason: They are formed by the superposition of two identical waves travelling in opposite directions.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When two waves with the same frequency, wavelength, and amplitude travelling in opposite directions will interfere they produce a standing wave. A standing wave is a wave which is not moving i.e. it is at rest. That is why they are called standing waves.
