Chlorine combines with excess of ammonia...

Chlorine combines with excess of ammonia to form ammonium chloride and nitrogen. Calculate the volume of ammonia required to completely react with 42 litres of chlorine. Under similar conditions of temperature and pressure.

The chemical equation representing the reaction is :
`underset(8 "Vol")(8NH_(3))+underset(3Cl_(2))to6NH_(4)Cl+N_(2)`
According to Gay Lussac.s law,
3 vol. of `Cl_(2)` react with 8 Vol. of `NH_(3)`
i.e., 3 litres of `Cl_(2)` react with 8 litres of `NH_(3)`
`therefore` 42 litres of `Cl_(2)` react with `8/3xx42`
=112 litres of `NH_(3)`
`therefore` Vol. of `NH_(3)` = 112 litres.
