Figure shows the position-time graph of ...

Figure shows the position-time graph of a particle of mass `0.04kg`. Suggest a suitable physical context for this motion. What is the time between two consecutive impulses received by the particle? What is the magnitude of each impluse?

Text Solution

Just before`t=2s`, the velocity of the particle is
`u=(2-0)/(2-0)=1cm s^(-1)=0.01 ms^(-1)`
Just after `t=2s`, the velocity of the particle is
`v=(0-2)/(4-2) = -1 cm s^(-1)=-0.01 ms^(-1)`
The magnitude of impulse, `J=|m(v-u)|`
`=|0.04(-0.01-0.01)|=8xx10^(-4)Ns`
The given `x-t` graph may represent the repeated rebounding of a particle between two elastic walls at `x=0` and `x=2x=cm`. The particle will get an impluse of `8xx10^(-4)Ns` after every 2s.
