A body floats in a liquid contained in a beaker. The whole system as shown in the figure falls freely under gravity. The upthrust on the body is

A

zero

B

equal to the weight of the liquid displaced

C

equal to the weight of the body in air

D

equal to the weight of the immersed portion of the body

The correct Answer is:
A, B, C, D

The system consisting of the body floating in water in the beaker is in a state is weightlessness when it is falling freely gravity. If the body is initially floating(while starting to fall, say, from rest) It will continue to float during the free fall. The body remains unchanged. However, the weight of the imersed portion of the body and the weight of the liquid displaced both becomes zero during the free fall. The upthrust on the body, therefore, becomes zero. The weight of the body in air also becomes zero because it becomes weightless. Hence, all the four options `a, b, c` and are correct.
