Figure. Shows two air filled bulbs connected by a U-tube partly filled with alcohol. What happens to the levels of alcohol in the limbs X and Y when an electric bulb placed midway between the bulbs is lighted?

A

The level of alcohol in limb X falls while that in limb Y rises

B

The level of alcohol in limb X rises while that in limb Y falls

C

The level of alcohol falls in both limbs

D

There is no change in the levels of alcohol in either of the two limbs

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
A

Black bulb absorbs more heat in comparison with painted bulb. So air in black bulb expands more. Hence the level of alcohol in limb X falls while that in limb Y rises.

two glass bulbs of equal volume are connected by a narrow tube and are filled with a gas at 0(@)C at a pressure of 76cm of mercury. One of the bulbs is then placed in melting ice and the other is placed in a water bath maintained at 62^(@)C .What is the new value of the pressure inside the bulbs? The volume of the connecting tube is neigligible.

Answer the following: (a) When a parallel plate capacitor is connected across a dc battery, explain briefly how the capacitor gets charged. (b) A parallel plate capacitor of capacitance 'C' is charged to 'V' volt by a battery. After some time the battery is disconnected and the distance between the plates is doubled. Now a slab of dielectric constant 1ltklt2 is introduced to fill the space between the plates. How will the following be affected ? (i) The electric field between the plates of the capacitor. (ii) The energy stored in the capacitor. Justify your answer in each case. (c) The electric potential as a function of distance 'x' is shown in the figure. Draw a graph of the electric field E as a function of x.

Two identical glass bulbs are interconnected by a thin glass tube. A gas is filled in these bulbs at N.T.P. If one bulb is placed in ice and another bulb is placed in hot bath, then the pressure of the gas becomes 1.5 times. The temperature of hot bath will be

B_1,B_2 and B_3 are three identical bulbs connected as shown in (fig. 3.46). When all the three bulbs glow, a current of 3 A is recorded by the ammeter A . (i) What happens to the glow of the other two bulbs when the bulb B_1 gets fused ? (ii) What happens to the readings of A_1,A_2,A_3 and A when the bulb B_2 gets fused ? (iii) How much power is dissipated in the circuit when all the three bulbs glow together ? .

Two capillary tubes of diameters 3.0 mm and 6.0 mm are joined together to form a U -tube open at both ends. If the U -tube is filled with water, what is the difference in its levels in the two limbs of the tube ? Surface tension of water at the temperature of the experiment is 7.3xx10^(2)N//m . Take the angie of contact to be zero and density of water to be 10^(3)kg//m^(3) ( g=9.8m//s^(2) )

A gas is filled into a bulb connected to an open limb manometer. The level of mercury in the open arm is 2.1 cm lower than that in the other arm of the manometer. The atmospheric pressure is 740 mm. What is the pressure of the gas?

Figure shows an inductor L and a resistor R connected in parallel to a battery through a switch. The resistance R is the same as that of the coil L. Two identical bulbs are put in each arm of the circuit? (i) Which of the bulb lights up earlier when switch S is closed? (ii) Will the bulbs be equally bright after some time?

In a constant volume gas thermometer, the pressure of the working gas is measured by the difference in the levels of mercury in the two arms of a U-tube connected to the gas at one end. When the bulb is placed at the room temperature 27.0^0 C , the mercury column in the arm open to atmosphere stands 5.00 cm above the level of mercury in the other arm. When the bulb is placed in a hot liquid, the difference of mercury levels becomes 45.0 cm . Calculate the temperature of the liquid. (Atmospheric pressure = 75.0cm of mercury).
