Two blocks each having a mass of 3.2 kg ...

Two blocks each having a mass of 3.2 kg are connected by a wire CD and the system is suspended from the ceiling by another wire AB . The linear mass density of the wire AB is 10 g /m and that of CD is `8 g m^-1.` Find the speed of a transverse wave pulse produced in AB and in CD.

Tension in string `AB is `T_(AB)=6.4g=64 N`
thus speed of transverse waves in string AB is
`v_(AB)=sqrt(T_(AB))/(mu_(AB))=sqrt(64)/(10xx10^(-3))`
`=sqrt(6400)=80 m//s`
Tension in string `CD` is `T=3.2 g=32 N`
Thus speed of transverse waves in string `CD` is
`v_(CD)=sqrt(T_(CD))/(mu_(DC))=sqrt(32)/(8xx10^(-3))=sqrt(4000)=63.24 m//s`
