How many nodal planes are these in the atomic orbitals for the principal quantum number n = 3 ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Shell with `n = 3` has ` 1s (3s),3p(p_(x)p_(y)p_(z)) ` and `5d(d_(xy)d_(z)d_(y^(2) - y^(3)) ` and ` d_(z^(2)`
x has no nodal plane
Each of `p_(x)p_(y)p_(z)` has one nodel palne means a total of three nodal plases
`d_(z^(2)` has no nodal palne
Each of `d_(xy)d_(xz) d_(x)d_(x^(2) - y^(2)` has nodal plases
Hence for `n = 3` a total of nodal planes are there .
