MULTIMOLECULAR COLLOIDS, MACROMOLECULAR AND ASSOCIATED COLLOIDS

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

a. Multimolercular cooloids: A large number of atoms or smaller molecules of a substance on dissolution aggregate together to form species having size (diameter lt1mm) in the colloidal range `(1-1000nm)` . Such species are, known as multimolecular colloids. For example, a sulphur sol consist of particles containing a thousand or more `S_(S)` sulphur molecules.
b. Macromolecular colloids: Macromolecules (starch, cellulose, proteins and nylon, polyethene, etc.) when dissolved in suitable solvent form a solution wherein the size of the macromolecules may fall within the colloidal range. Such systems are called macromolecular colloids.

PURIFICATION OF COLLOIDAL SOLUTION

All colloids :

Coagulation of Colloids

A colloid always :

Match the items given in Column I and Column II. {:(,"Column I","Column II"),(A.,"Protective colloid",1.FeCl_(3)+NaOH),(B.,"Liquid-liquid colloid",2."Lyophilic colloids"),(C.,"Positively charged colloid",3."Emulsion"),(D.,"Negatively charged colloid",4.FeCl_(3)+"hot water"):}

All colloidal sols show:

Column - I and Column - II contains four emtries each. Entries of Column -I are to be matched with some entries of Column - II . One or more than one entries of Column -I may have the matching with the same entries of Column - II. {:("column-I","column-II"),((A) As_(2)S_(3)"sol","(P) Lyophobic colloid"),("(B) sulphur sol ",(Q) " Macromolecualr colloid"),("(C) starch","(R) Multimolecular colloid "),("(D)Soap","(S) Associated colloid "):}

What are Associated Colloids ? Given an example.
