A sol of `Agl` can be positively or negatively charged. Explain how and why?

Text Solution

Charge on the colloidal particles is due to the preferential adsorption of `Kl` adsorbs negative `I^(ɵ)` ions and hence is negatively charged. However, on shaking `AgI` with excess of `AgNO_(3)` solution, it will adsorb `Ag^(o+)` ions and hence becomes positively charged.
