Analysis shows that nickel oxide has the formula `Ni_(0.00)`. What fractions of nickel exist as `Ni^(2+)` and `Ni^(3+)` ions?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`O.N.` of `Ni` in `Ni_(0.98)O = 0.98 x - 2 xx 1 = 0`
`x = (2)/(0.98) = 2.04`
`O.N.` of `Ni` is an intermediate value of `Ni^(2+)` and `Ni^(2+)`.
Let % of `Ni^(2+) = a`
`(2a + 3(100 - a))/(100) = 2.04`
Solve for `a = 96%`
`Ni^(2+) = 96%, Ni^(3+) = 4%`
