What role does the molecular interaction play in a solution of alcohol and water?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Molecular interaction between alcohol and `H_(2)O` makes the solution non`-` ideal with `+ve` deviation, since the interation between alcohol and alcohol is `H-` bond and `H_(2)O` and `H_(2)O` is also `H-` bonding . After mixing, the interaction between alcohol and `H_(2)O` is also `H-` bonding but less than the `H-` bonding in alcohol and `H_(2)O` separately.
So the interation after mixing decreases and the vapour pressure of solution increases and forms low boiling point azeotropte.
