Which aqueous solution has higher concentration , 1 molar or 1 molal of the same solute?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`1M` has higher concentration than `1m.` This is because `1m` solution`=1m` in `1000g` of solvent or `1000cc` of solvent `( :' d =1 g c c^(-1))`, but `1M` in `1000 c c ` of solution whiCHM contains less then present in the solution. Hence, `1000c c` of solvent will contain more than `1 mol e` of the solute.
Alternatively, `1M` solution means `1 mol e` of the solute in `1000 c c` of the solution whereas `1m ` solution means `1 mol e` of the solution in `1000 c c` of water `(=1000 c c ` of water `)` . Total volume of `1m` solution `gt1000 c c ` due to the presence of extra `1 m` solution of the solute. Hence, number of moles `// c c` of `1m` solution will be less then that of `1M` solution . In other words, `1M` is more concentrated than `1m`.
