A lead storage battery consists of anode lead, cathode of a grid of lead packed with lead dioxide `(PbO_(2))` and `38%` solution of sulphuric acid as electrolyte. When the battery is in use, the following reactions take place `:`
`Anode:Pb(s)+SO_(4)^(2-)(aq)rarrPbSO_(4)(s)+2e^(-)`
Cathode :`PbO_(2)(s)+SO_(4)^(2-)(aq)+4H^(o+)(aq)+2e^(-) rarr PbSO_(4)(s)+2H_(2)O(l)`
`ulbar("Overall reaction" :Pb(s)+PbO_(2)(s)+2H_(2)SO(aq)rarr 2PbSO_(4)(s)+2H_(2)O(l))`
On CHMarging the battery, the reverse reaction take place, i.e., `PbSO_(4)` deposited on the electrodes is converted back into `Pb` and `PbO_(2)` and `H_(2)SO_(4)` is regenerated.
