Although `D_(2)O` resembles `H_(2)O` chemically, yet it is a toxic substance. Explain

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Chemically heavy water is deuterium oxide `(D_(2)O)`. Like ordinary water it is odourless and tastless liquid. The slower rate of `D^(o+)` compared to `H^(o+)` in reactions involved in enzymatic catalysis. Due to this, `D_(2)O` is toxic in nature. This also becomes toxic because its is produced by repeating electrolysis in electrolytic cell.
