Define various types of atomic radii. Why is covalent radius smaller than metallic and van der Waals' radii ? How do atomic radii vary in a group and in a period.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Metallic radius is half the distance between centre of nuclei of two atoms of metal held together by metallic bond.
van der Waals radius is half of the distance between centre of nuclei of two atoms held by weak van der Waals forces of attraction.
