Assertion : Ionic bonds are directional...

Assertion : Ionic bonds are directional in nature whereas covalent bonds are non-directional.
Reason : According to orbital overlap concept , the formation of a covalent bond between two atoms results by pairing of electrons present in the valence shell having same spins.

Text Solution

In covalent bond, the shared `e^(-)` pairs are localised between the two atoms or a covalent bond is formed by the overlap of half-filled `AO's` which have definite directions. Hence, covalent bond is directional.
In ionic compounds, each ion is surrounded by a number of oppositely charged ions and there is no definite direction.
