Among `NH_(3), H_(2)O, HF` and `H_(2)S` which would have highest magnitude of hydrogen bonding ?

Text Solution

Among `NH_(3),H_(2)O` and `HF,HF` will have highest magnitude of hydrogen bonding . Due to greater electronegativity of `N,O` and `F` as compared to `H`,`NH_(3)`,`H_(2)O`, and `HF` undergo intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Since electronegativity of `F` is the highest, therefore the magnitude of `+ve` charge on hydrogen and `-ve`charge on `F` is the highest and hence electrostatic attraction between `H` and `F` or hydrogen bonding is the strongest in `H-F`.
