How can saline hydrides remove traces of water from organic compounds?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Saline hydrides react with water forming their correspondigng metal hydroxide and liberate `H_(2)` gas.
`CaH_(2)+H_(2)Oto Ca(OH)_(2)+H_(2)uarr`
Thus, traces of water present in organic compounds can be easily removed by distilling them over saline hydrides, when `H_(2)` escapes into the atmosphere, metal hydroxide is left in the flask while dry organic solvent distils over.
