Account for the following : (i) NH(3) ...

Account for the following :
(i) `NH_(3)` is a stronger base than `PH_(3)`
(ii) Sulphur has a greater tendency for catenation than oxygen.
(iii) Bond dissociation energy of `F_(2)` is less than that of `Cl_(2)`.

Text Solution

i. With the increases of size, the bond length increases form fluorine to iodine. Since the bond length of fluorine is minimum, its bond dissociation energy should be highest. But the bond dissociation energy of flurine is less than `CI-CI` and `Br-Br`. The lower valiue of bond dissociation energy of fluorine is due to the high interelectronic repulsions between the non-bonding electrons in the 2p-orbitals of fluorine.
