How is cast iron different from pig iron ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The iron obtained from blast furnace is called pig iron. It contans about `4%` corbon and many other impurities like S,P,Si,Mn etc. in smaller amounts.
Cast, iron, on the other hand, is made by melting pig iron with scrap iron and coke using hot air blast. It has slightly lower carbon content (about `3%`) and is extremely hard and brittle.
