Why `NI_5` does not exist While `PCl_5` exists?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Nitrogen due to absence of d-orbitals in its valence shell cannot expand its covalency beyond four, hence `NI_5` does not exist. On the other hand P has vacant 3d orbitals in its valence shell and the covalency in P can be expanded to five and `PCl_5` exists.
