Give reasons:
iodoform is obtained by the reaction of acetone with hypoiodite but not with iodide ion.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Hypoiodite acts as an oxidising agent and this reaction is initiated by the replacement of methyl protons by `I^(o+)`. Moreover, hypoiodite ion `(OI^(ɵ))` acts as a base to abstract methyl proton, while `I^(ɵ)` is a weak base (but strong nucleophile) and cannot abstract methyl proton.
