What is inert pair effect?explain in reference to chemistry of 15 group elements.

The reluctance of valence electrons in s orbital to react in case of heavier members of the group is known as inert pair effect in group 15 the stability of +5 oxidation state decreases down the group nitrogen and phosphorus from stable +5 state compounds whereas bismuth forms only +3 state stable compounds.
