An ion with mass number 56 contains 3 units of positive charge and 30.4% more neutrons than electrons. What would be the symbol of this ion?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Suppose, the number of electrons present in the ion is x.
No. of neutrons in the ion
`=x+((x xx 30.4)/(100))=1.304x`
Since the ion contains 3 units of positive charge,
the number of electrons present in the parent atom =x+3
and, number of protons present in the parent atom =x+3
No. of protons =No. of neutrons =Mass number
`(x+3)+1.304x=56`
`2.304x=53`
`or x=(53)/(2.304)=23`
No. of protons =Atomic number `=x+3=23+3=26`
Hence the symbol of the ion is `""_(26)^(56)Fe^(3+)`.
