Can you tell?
Why does a freely suspended magnet always settle in the north-south direction?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
It is inferred by the scientist William Gillbert that the earth itself is a gigantic magnet. The magnetic north pole of the earth is situated near its geographic south pole, and magnetic south pole of the earth is situated near earth north pole. Thus, when a magnet is suspended freely., the north pole of the magnet is attracted towards the earth's magnetic south pole, located near the geographic north pole and the south pole of the magnet is attracted towards the earth's magnetic north pole, located near geographic south pole. Hence, a freely suspended magnet comes to rest in the north-south directions.

A current carrying circular loop is freely suspended by a long thread. The plane of the loop will point in the direction

A uniform magnetic field of 1.5 T exists in a cylindrical region of radius 10.0 cm, its direction parallel to the axis along east to west. A wire carrying current of 7.0 A in the north to south direction passes through this region. What is the magnitude and direction of the force on the wire. If, the wire intersects the axis .

Two concentric circular coils x and y of radius 16 cm and 10 cm respectively, lie in the same vertical plane containing the north to south direction coil x has 20 turns and carries current of 16A coil y has 25 turns and carries a current of 18A! The sense of the current in x is anticlockwise and clockwise in y for an observe looking at the coils facing west. Give The magnitude and direction of net magnetic field due to the coils at the centre.

Assertion: The magnetic poles of earth do not coincide with the geographic poles. Reason: The discrepancy between orientation of a compass and true north-south direction is known as magnetic declination.
