Why Al Cl(3) is a covalent molecule but ...

Why `Al Cl_(3)` is a covalent molecule but is ionized in water to give `Al^(+3)` and `Cl^(-)` ions ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`AlC_(3)` (anhydrous) is covalent because of very high ionisation energy required for formation of `Al^(+3)` . But in hydrated conditioin , this excessive energy is obtained by hydration energy of smaller `Al^(+3)` ion .
