Two metallic spheres of radii a and b ar...

Two metallic spheres of radii a and b are placed far away from each other and re connected by a thin conducting wire. A charge Q is given to one of the sphere. Calculate the charge on each sphere at electrostatic equilibrium

Text Solution

Let `q_(1)` and `q_(2)` are the charges at electrostatic equilibrium.
At this state, the potential of the spheres are same.
`implies (q_(1))/(4pi epsilon_(0)a) = ( q_(2))/( 4pi epsilon_(0)b)`
`implies (q_(1))/(q_(2))= (a)/(b)`
Also, `Q = q_(1)+q_(2)`
`implies q_(1)= ( Qa)/((a+b)),q_(2)= (Qb)/((a+b))`
