Two point charges`2 mu C` and `8 mu C` areplaced 12 cm apart. Find the position of the point where the electric field intensity will be zero.

Let the E field be zero at point P, a distance x from `2muC` as shown

So, at P, the electric Field due to both the charges must be equal and opposite. Balancing the magnitude of electric Field due to them gives
`(k2)/(x^(2))=(k8)/((12-x)^(2))`
Taking square root of both sides gives
`(1)/(x)=(2)/((12-x))`
`:." "x=4" cm"`
