Find the cut off wavelength for the con...

Find the cut off wavelength for the continuous X - rays coming from an X-ray tube operating at 40 kV.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When the wavelength is minimum, the energy `(hc/lambda)` of x-ray photon will be maximum.
Hence, the total kinetic energy (eV) of the electron should be converted into an X-ray photon.
So, `hc/lambda = eV`
or `lambda = hc/eV`
= `(4.14 xx 10^(-15) eV-s)(3xx10^(8)ms^(-1))/(e xx40 xx10^(3)V)`
`(4.14xx3)/4 xx 10^(-11)m`
`= 3.1 xx 10^(-11)m`
