The velocity of sound in air at 20^(@)C ...

The velocity of sound in air at `20^(@)C` is `340ms^(-1)`. Keeping the temperature constant, what will be the velocity of sound in air when the pressure of the gas is doubled?

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
340 m/s

`v=sqrt((gammaRT)/(M))=sqrt((gammaP)/(rho))`
Since , pressure becomes double at constant temperature ,
`:.` Volume of fhte gas is halved acoording to the ideal gas equation . This increase the density of the gas from ` rho "to" 2 rho `
` :.` v still remains `sqrt((gammaP)/(rho))`
Thus , we can say that the speed of sound in air is independent of pressure .
