Carbon monoxide gas is more dangerous than carbon dioxide gas. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Carbon monoxide is a very harmful gas because it combines with the haemoglobin of blood to form carboxyhaemoglobin which is unable to transport oxygen. As a result, the body becomes oxygen starved. At 100 ppm concentration in air, it causes giddiness and headache. At higher concentrations, it is fatal for human beings. On the other hand carbon dioxide does not combine with haemoglobin and is therefore less harmful. However, it is instrumental in causing global warming.
