Why is diamond hard ?...

Why is diamond hard ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In diamond, each carbon undergoes `sp^(3)` hybridization. A carbon atom is bound to four carbon atoms, arranged in a tetrahedral symmetry, with single bonds. A three dimensional arrangement of the tetrahedral structures result in giant molecule. The bond energy is very high (348 kJ mol). It is very difficult to break the bonds. So, diamond is hard.
