A line in Lyman series of hydrogen atom ...

A line in Lyman series of hydrogen atom has a wavelength of `1.03xx10^(-7)m` . What is the initial energy level of the electron ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Given `lamda=1.03xx10^(-7)m=1.03xx10^(-5)cm`
`n_(2)=1` (for Lyman series)
We have, `R=109677cm^(-1)`
Rydberg equation is `(1)/(lamda)=R[(1)/(n_(1)^(2))-(1)/(n_(2)^(2))]`
`:.(1)/(1.03xx10^(-5))=109677[(1)/(n_(1)^(2))-(1)/(n_(2)^(2))]`
`impliesn_(2)=3` (i.e.) original energy level of electron is 3.
