According to Bronsted proton donor is acid and acceptor is-base. Water has the ability to behave as an acid as well as base. So it is an amphoteric substance.
Eg : i) Water acts as acid with ammonia.
`H_(2)O_((l))+NH_(3(aq))hArrOH_((aq))^(Ө)+NH_(4(aq))^(o+)`
Here water is proton donor.
ii) `H_(2)O_((l))+H_(2)S_((aq))hArrH_(3)O_((aq))^(o+)+HS_((aq))^(Ө)`
Here water is proton acceptor.
