The ways of using the knowledge and the principles of chemistry and other sciences to develop methods to reduce as far as possible the pollution of the environmnet are known as green chemistry .
Ex : In the dry cleaning of clothes, earlier `(C Cl_(2) = C Cl_(2))` tetrachloroethane was used . This compound contaminates the ground water and is a sugpected carcinogen . Therefore , using this compound is replaced by a process in which liquefied carbon dioxide with a suitable detergent is used . This would not pollute ground water much . Now - a-days hydrogen peroxide is used for bleaching clothes in laundries. This gives better results and decreases the consumption of water.
Ex : Synthesis of ethanol is now commercially prepared by one step by the oxidation of ethane in presence of catalyst.
`CH_(2) = CH_(2) + O underset(Pd^(+2)//Cu^(+2))overset("Catalyst")to CH_(3)CHO (90%)`
