Write reactions to justify amphoteric nature of aluminium .

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`to` Amphoteric nature means having acidic as well as basic nature.
`to` Aluminium reacts with both mineral acids as well as aqueous alkalis.
a) Reaction with mineral acid :
Al reacts with dil.HCl and liberates hydrogen gas.
`2Al + 6HCl to 2AlCl_3 + 3H_2 uarr`
b) Reaction with aqueous alkali :
`Al` reacts with aqueous alkali (NaOH) and liberates hydrogen gas.
`2Al + 2NaOH + 6H_2 O to Na_2 [Al(OH)_4] + 3H_2 uarr`
