B-Cl bond has a bond moment. Explain why `BCl_3` molecule has zero dipole moment.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`to` B-Cl bond is a polar bond so it has bond moment.
`to` `BCl_3` molecule is non-polar because of its symmetrical structure. (Trigonal planar structure)
Symmetrical molecules has zero dipole moment.
`therefore` Dipole moment of `BCl_3 (mu)` = 0 .
