The mean diameter of a thin brass rod is...

The mean diameter of a thin brass rod is to be measured by vernier callipers. Why is a set of 100 measurements of the diameter expected to yield a more reliable estimate than a set of 5 measurements only ?

A large number of observations will give more reliable result than smaller number of observations. This is because of probability of making a positive random error of certain magnitude is equal to that of making a negative random errors are likely to cancel and the result may be more reliable.

The diameter of a cylinder is measured using a vernier callipers with no zero error. It is found that zero of the vernier lies in between 5.10 cm and 5.15 cm of the main scale. The vernier has 50 divisions equivalent to 2.45 cm. The 24th division of the main scale exactly coincides with one of the main scale divisions. the diameter of the cylinder is

A spherical glass vessel has a cylindrical neck 8 cm long, 2 cm in diameter. The diameter of the spherical part is 8.5 cm. By measuring the amount of water it holds, a child find its volume to be 345 cm^3 . Check whether she is correct, taking the above as inside measurements and pi = 3.14

The main scale of vernier callipers has 10 equal divisions in 1 cm and 10 vernier scale divisions coincide with 9 main scale divisions, when both the jaws are in contact. Now, the above instrument is used to measure the external diameter of a cylinder. The 43rd division on the main scale is observed to the left of the zero of the vernier, when the object is held tightly in between the two jaws and the seventh division of the vernier coinsides with a division on the main scale, then
