The edge of an aluminium cube is 10 cm long. One face of the cube is firmly fixed to a verticle wall. A mass of 100 kg is then attached to the opposite face of the cube. The shear modulus of aluminium is 25 Gpa. What is the vertical deflection of this face ?

`A=0.10xx0.10=10^(-2)m^(2),F=mg=10xx10N`
Shearing strain`=(DeltaL)/(L)=(((F)/(A)))/(eta)`
or `DeltaL=(FL)/(Aeta)`
`=((100xx10)xx(0.10))/(10^(-2)xx(25xx10^(9)))=4xx10^(-7)m`.
