Why photorespiration does not occur in `C_(4)` plants ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`C_(4)` plants have a mechanism that increases the concentration of `CO_(2)` at the enzyme site. This takes place when `C_(4)` acid from the Mesophyll cell is brokendown in the bundle sheath cells to release `CO_(2)`, results in increasing intracellular concentrationn of `CO_(2)`. In turn RUBIsCO functions as carboxylase, minimising the oxygease activity.
