Subject: .How nitrogen cycle is helpful to plants and animals.
Moderator: Nitrogen is inevitable for the growth and sustenance of living organisms as it is the essential component of proteins. Nitrogen is the major element in the air. The process of conversion of atmospheric into soluble nitrogenous compounds necessary for growth and development of the plants and animals and then the decomposition of these compounds back in to free atmospheric nitrogen is called nitrogen cycle. I invite Manu for the presentation of the subject.
Manu: Action of some bacteria combustion of fuels, algae, phenomenon like lightning, chemicals, etc., are the important factors in the nitrogen cycle.
Krishna: Lightning is a blessing in disguise. This is because during thunder anf lightning when electric discharge passes through the air, the free atmospheric nitrogen combines with oxygen to forn nitric oxide gas. The nitric oxide reacts with moe oxygen to form nitrogen dioxide gas, which gets dissolved in water to form nitric acid and falls down to the earth when it rains which is absorbed by the plants.
Sebin: This process retain the fertility of soil. The bacteria called rhizobium, living in the roots of legumes can directly absorb nitrogen from the atmosphere and convert it into salts. Thus the nitrigen converted is stored in the root nodules and used by plants for their growth.
Devu: Plants only get a very small amount of nitrogen through lightning and microorganisms. So some chemical fertilisers are used. These provide large quantities of nitrogen to plants. Urea, ammonium sulphate, sodium nitrate etc. are commonly used nitrogen fertlisers.
Anu: The decomposition and decay of plants and animals provide large quantities of nitrogen to plants.
Moderator: Nitrogen is essential for the growth and existence of living beings. Thus a natural cycle is set up which continuously goes on converting atmospheric nitrogen in to nitrogenous compounds, which are reconverted in to atmospheric nitrogen. So, this process is very important for the sustaining of life on earth.
