Subject: Depletion of Ozone layer and its remedial measures
Introduction: Before photosynthesis evolved, Earth.s atmosphere have no oxygen and ozone. As a result , UV radiation reaches the earth in large amount. This can cause the locomotion of life on earth. Chlorophyll and green plants were formed. Finally photosynthesis takes place and oxyen formed in the atmosphere. Ozone is formed from oxygen. It is a vital to life on planet. Ozone acts as a protective blanket around the earth, our only natural protection from the sun.s deadly UV rays. So the depletion of ozone layer is a threat to all the living organisms including man. When the thickness of ozone layer decreases by 10%, we can expect 20% increase in the UV radiation.
The main reason for the depletion of ozone layer is the presence of Chloro fluoro Carbon (CFC). CFC.s are a group of synthetic chemical developed in 1930 by an American scientist for refrigeration applications. Before the arrival of CFC.s they used sulphur and ammonia which are toxic and corrosive. When they reach the stratosphere, they react with UVand releases chlorine radical ions. These chlorine atoms reacts with ozone which produces chlorine oxide and combines with another oxygen to form oxygen moelcule and chlorine. The liberated chlorine atom again reacts with another ozone molecule and this process continues until the ozone layer is depleted. One chlorine atom can destroy thousands pf ozone molecules. If the UV radiation reaches the earth, it can cause dreadful skin diseases, cataract and some others. These rays can cause severe damage to soft tissues of plants and animals. They will destroy the pytoplankton, which affects the primary food chain. This will destruct the ecosystem and equilibrium of nature.
Conclusion: Ozone is a protective balnket around the earth. It protects both plants and animals from very dangerous ultraviolet rays. So we can also take some steps for reducing the depletion of the ozone layer.
