Presentation: Most of the substances we see around are made up of carbon. Carbon alone has more number of compounds compared to any other elements till known. This is the reason for studying carbon compounds. Besides carbons other elements like hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and sulphur are also present in the compunds. Though carbon is present in monoxide and dioxides, and other carbonates of metal, they are not considered under organic chemistry.

Importance of organic chemistry: Organic chemistry has great importance in human life. Since no other branch of science is os much related to human life. Organic chemistry means the chemistry related to living organisms. If it is not developed, then the human life will not be improved so much.
Important organic compounds: There are many indispensable organic compounds needed for human life. Our food material contain several organic compounds like proteins, fats, lipids, carbohydrates, hydrogenated oils and fossil fuels like coal , petroleum etc. Now synthetic fibres of rayon, terylene, nylon etc., have taken place for the natural fibres of cotton, jute and others. Medicines like sulpha drugs and other antibiotics are also oragnic compounds. Paints, dye, plastics, fertilisers and pesticides are some other compounds which have made our life comfortable and ssecure.
Almost all the substances we see and use in our daily life are organic compounds. Without these things life is impossible.
